“Make a Joyful Noise Unto The Lord...” – Psalm 100:1

Here are some answers to questions I’m often asked about my studio:

What ages / levels do you teach?

I teach beginner and intermediate for piano, beginning through advanced students for voice (singing), and beginning through intermediate for saxophone.  Children and adults are welcome.   I prefer that beginning children are able to read confidently, but that is not a deal-breaker if there is musical interest and / or aptitude there.

What type of music do you teach?

I use music to meet the students specific needs.   For instance if an older student is preparing for Solo & Ensemble Festival we will use approved art songs appropriate for that competition.  If a student just wants to prepare something for a performance in church, then music will be supplied appropriate for that setting as well.    I do not object for students bringing in their own music and input on that as well.

Do you use a specific curriculum?

If possible, I try to fine tune the curriculum to the individual student.   For piano I prefer the Alfred’s methods based on an age-level.   For voice I use a series from Chris and Carole Beatty that teaches “free” singing.  For kids, they have a wonderful curriculum called, “Teaching Kids to sing” in CD and DVD formats.   In teaching saxophone I typically use the methods or literature that is supplied to them through their band instructor.

What length of lessons do you offer?    I offer 30 minute lessons.  (MT-45 minutes)

What do you charge?  My standard fee is $100 a month for music lessons.   (see below for MT rates)

When and how do you expect payment?

Payment is due on the first lesson of the month for all lessons scheduled during that month.  I accept payment via check, cash or Venmo.    If you are to be absent the first lesson of the month, payment is still expected.

What is your policy regarding missed lessons?

If I must cancel a lesson due to illness or a performance opportunity, I will do my best to reschedule that same week.  If I am unable to do so, I will give a credit of one lesson for the following month.  In many cases, will extend the time of the lesson for the remainder of the month.   (depends on time frame and age of child)

If a student has to cancel due to illness or a school activity, the same policy applies as long as I have at least 24 hours notice of the absence.  No credit or makeup will be given for lessons missed without notice or for no-shows.  Same day notice for absences are ok only in the case of illness.

With long term absences or cancelations (due to vacations or sports/musicals conflicts) I cannot reserve your spot unless payment is received for that time frame.   I reserve the right to give up your spot to another paying student.

Any cancelations one month or more require a month's advance notice.  This allows for me to not have a sudden loss of income and to have appropriate time to make adjustments.

What performance opportunities do you provide for your students?

Because of the variety of instruments, backgrounds and levels I do not require a formal recital performance.  Although, I encourage (and prepare) all students for a performance whether it is a school competition or audition, church performance, or talent show performance.  If no performance goal is in mind I encourage the student to perform for family or as a community outreach for senior citizens which I will arrange.

What is your background in teaching?

I have been teaching private music lessons for approximately 30 years and have enjoyed watching my students continue in their music endeavors as music educators or worship leaders!   I have also taught elementary music and band at Christian schools as well as directing hand bell and vocal choirs for churches and senior centers.

What is your education?

I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Church music with a minor in Psychology.   My music degree is with an emphasis on voice and conducting with a minor in saxophone. I just recently graduated with my 2nd Bachelor's Degree in Music Therapy.  I am a licensed MT-BC.
